Bell on Tuesday announced the launch of a new suite of always-on internet solutions for its all-fibre Bell Fibe internet customers, including uninterruptible power supply (UPS) products and a wireless internet backup solution designed to keep users connected during service disruptions.
Bell’s new Power Backup solutions help to keep Fibe internet customers’ modems up and working during local power failures. Bell is currently selling two UPS options — an Anker SOLIX C300 portable power station for $300 (providing backup power for up to nine hours) and a CyberPower SX950U-FC UPS battery backup for $150 (delivering power for up to three hours). These products are now available for Bell Fibe customers in Ontario, Quebec, Manitoba and Atlantic Canada.
Bell’s Wireless Internet Backup is a feature that helps keep Wi-Fi connectivity running when the home internet connection is interrupted, by shifting internet traffic to Bell’s wireless network, with no additional fees or equipment required, Bell said in a press release. This feature is available exclusively to customers with both Bell Fibe internet and Bell Mobility services on one bill, as Wireless Internet Backup uses a compatible Bell mobility device as a hotspot to keep the customer’s Giga Hub 2.0 modem connected. Wireless Internet Backup helps only Wi-Fi devices stay online, and does not support voice-over-IP home phone and traditional Fibe TV service. It also will not work during a power outage when the modem has no power.
To help maintain connectivity during both power failures and network connection disruptions, Bell is recommending customers combine its Power Backup and Wireless Internet Backup solutions for a more reliable experience.
“Bell is raising the bar on reliability in an always-on world,” said Blaik Kirby, group president of consumer and small business at Bell, in a statement. “Canadians rely on their Internet every day, and they need to know their connection will work when the unexpected happens. With Bell’s always-on Internet solutions, we’ve got you covered — delivering built-in backup that helps customers stay online without missing a beat. It’s reliable connectivity Canadians can count on — because at Bell, we know that connection is everything.”
In December 2024, Rogers launched a “storm-ready” WiFi product that automatically switches to the Rogers cellular network when there is an internet service or power outage.
