WGC announces 2026-2028 council

The Writers Guild of Canada (WGC) on Wednesday announced its council for the 2026-2028 term.

The new council will serve from May 1, 2026, to April 30, 2028, representing the WGC’s more than 2,500 members across the country. The council is responsible for setting WGC policy and overseeing its activities.

Montreal-based writer and showrunner Bruce Smith (Street Legal19-2, Quebec Region) will continue as president. Also returning to the council are vice president Amanda Smith (Travelers, Central Region), treasurer Michael Amo (Pure, Atlantic Region), Sarah Dodd (Family Law, Pacific-Western Region), Anthony Q. Farrell (Shelved, Central Region), and Jason Filiatrault (Now, I Am a Bear, Pacific-Western Region).

Newly elected to the council is Laura Good (Central Region), an award-winning writer and co-executive producer on the Netflix series Bet. Her other credits include TransplantCoroner and Burden of Truth. She was the recipient of the WGC Sondra Kelly Award in 2023.

“Congratulations to both new and returning members of Council,” Victoria Shen, WGC executive director, said in a press release. “Canadian screenwriters are authors of Canadian content. Now, more than ever, we need strong and thoughtful leadership to protect against threats to our industry and cultural sovereignty.”

“It’s an honour to continue serving as President alongside this Council,” Bruce Smith said in a statement. “Canadian screenwriters are the heart of our industry, and right now we are facing real pressures. We are committed to ensuring writers have the protections, support, and work opportunities to keep Canadian voices on our screens.”

The WGC extended its thanks to departing councillor Jeremy Boxen, first elected in 2022, for his “outstanding service to the Guild”. Boxen has led “countless initiatives” in support of member screenwriters as chair of the professional development committee, the WGC said in its press release.
