Regina-based How We Do It Productions, in association with Accessible Media Inc. (AMI) and Citytv Saskatchewan, on Wednesday announced production has started on the new preschool series How We Do It.
Currently filming at the John Hopkins Regina Soundstage in Saskatchewan, How We Do It (27 episodes x 7 minutes) is “a series where kids of all abilities come together to show viewers how they live their lives,” said an AMI press release.
The series “aims to empower and uplift all voices, disabled or able-bodied, by creating a welcoming and inclusive space,” the release said.
Hosts Carly (played by Allison Lang), Isaac (played by Donovan Whyte) and Howie the Dog (a puppet operated by Crispi Lord) explore a range of topics relevant to preschoolers, from handling big feelings to trying new sports to making friends, with a special focus on the disability community. Whenever the trio needs insight or some advice, they call on a diverse group of young guests to help them share, laugh and play.
“How We Do It provides a space for children of all abilities to feel seen and heard,” said series creator Abigail Curtis, in a statement. “I want to help destigmatize disability and notably teach kids and adults that ‘disabled’ and ‘disability’ aren’t bad words.”
The series is being produced with the support of Creative Saskatchewan and the Canada Media Fund, and has an estimated economic impact of more than $1 million and has created 50 jobs, according to AMI’s press release.
“The cast and crew have gone above and beyond to create something whimsical, charming and engaging,” said producer Adrian Dean. “Everyone who steps on set is immediately drawn into a colourful world full of kindness.”
How We Do It is being produced with Integrated Descriptive Video, ensuring accessibility for blind and partially sighted audiences.
The series will air on AMI-tv starting in July. Episodes will be available on AMI+, AMI’s free streaming service. Further broadcast details will be announced soon, AMI said.
