Videotron doubles financial support for low-income seniors’ residences in Quebec

Videotron on Monday announced it is donating an additional $500,000 to support Mission Unitaînés’ expanded plan to build six more residence buildings for low-income seniors in six regions of Quebec.

This is on top of Videotron’s initial $500,000 contribution in 2024, which included a $300,000 cash donation for development and $200,000 in telecommunications services for senior residences in Montreal, Lévis, Longueuil, Terrebonne, St-Jean-sur-Richelieu and Granby.

Videotron’s new $500,000 contribution will support the development and connectivity of six new affordable senior residence buildings being built in Laval, Quebec City, Victoriaville, Saguenay, Trois-Rivières and Mascouche, as part of Phase 2 of Mission Unitaînés’ construction plan, Videotron said in a press release.

The funds will be allocated toward the development of shared spaces at the future seniors’ buildings, and Videotron Business will provide telecom services at preferential rates to units, Videotron said.

“Videotron knows how important it is for seniors to maintain social and family ties, especially at a time when isolation has become a major societal challenge,” said Pierre Karl Péladeau, Quebecor president and CEO, in the press release. “We are proud to continue our partnership with Mission Unitaînés and increase our total contribution to $1 million to make a real difference in the daily lives of seniors. In addition to having affordable housing, we believe it is crucial for these residents to be able to stay connected to their loved ones and their community.”

Launched in 2024, Mission Unitaînés’ project aims to add 1,700 social housing units to Quebec’s housing stock by building a total of 17 new senior residence buildings in 17 cities, to address the growing demand for affordable housing among Quebec’s aging population. One-in-four Quebecers will be 65 or older by 2031 and nearly one-in-three by 2061, according to data from the Institut de la statistique du Québec and the Canada Mortgage and Housing Corporation, cited by Mission Unitaînés.
