CRTC approves sale of CJAN-FM to Résonance Média

The CRTC last week approved the acquisition of Quebec radio station CJAN-FM Val-des-Sources by Résonance Média Inc. from Coopérative Web Média des Sources.

The commission also approved Résonance’s request for a new broadcasting licence to continue operating the station. The broadcasting regulator said the transaction is in the public interest and will help ensure the French-language station continues to provide local programming to the community of Val-des-Sources.

Based on the transaction value of $258,453, Résonance is required to pay tangible benefits totalling $15,507 in equal installments over seven consecutive broadcasting years, allocated to various Canadian content development (CCD) funds including the Canadian Starmaker Fund, Fonds RadioStar, FACTOR, Musicaction, the Community Radio Fund of Canada and any eligible CCD initiative at Résonance’s discretion.

Résonance has proposed to broadcast 126 hours of programming per broadcast week on CJAN-FM, including 77 hours of local programming, which would include spoken word programming and music. Résonance said spoken word programming and news bulletins would cover local, national and international news, and the radio station would also offer nine hours and 10 minutes of broadcast time per year to community organizations in the Les Sources Regional County Municipality to promote local initiatives. The Commission found Résonance’s proposal meets local programming and news requirements.

The CRTC also expects CJAN-FM to devote at least five per cent of the station’s musical selections per broadcast week to selections from Canadian emerging artists, and Indigenous musical selections should be included on the station’s playlist.

CJAN-FM’s new licence will expire Aug. 31, 2030, the same expiry date currently in place for the station.
