CRTC approves Northwestel’s new gigabit business internet packages

The CRTC last week approved, by majority decision, a May application from Northwestel proposing to introduce two new 1 Gbps business internet packages to its general tariff.

The new packages include Northwestel’s Cable Business Internet 1 Gbps Unlimited package, with a download speed of 1 Gbps and an upload speed of 40 Mbps, and its FTTP Business Internet 1 Gbps Unlimited package, with symmetrical 1 Gbps download and upload speeds. Both packages are priced at $499 per month.

Northwestel said in its application its 1 Gbps cable business internet package would be available starting in the fall of 2025, while the 1 Gbps FTTP business internet plan would be introduced gradually, starting in Atlin, B.C., in June, followed by Whitehorse, Yukon, during the summer and other areas at later dates.

Northwestel, in fact, did launch 1 Gbps fibre-to-the-home internet in Atlin in June, having completed its fibre transport network to Atlin late last year.

In addition, the far north telecom in early December launched 1 Gbps home internet service in Yellowknife and Whitehorse, saying it was the fastest internet available in these cities.
