Northwestel announced Tuesday it is now offering up to 700 Mbps download and upload speeds to home internet users in Tuktoyaktuk, Northwest Territories, and businesses in the community can now access speeds of up to 750 Mbps.
With the upgrade, the community also now has access to Northwestel TV Plus, the northern telecom provider’s live and on-demand TV service.
Northwestel first launched fibre internet in Tuktoyaktuk in October 2023, offering speeds up to 50 Mbps. The speed boost to 700 Mbps is made possible after Northwestel recently connected its fibre infrastructure in Tuktoyaktuk to the Government of Northwest Territories’ new fibre line running from Inuvik to Tuktoyaktuk, Northwestel said in a press release.
“We’re excited to bring this upgrade to Tuktoyaktuk, one of the Northwest Territories’ northernmost communities, situated at the edge of the Arctic Ocean,” said Curtis Shaw, president of Northwestel, in the company’s press release. “Delivering modern internet technology to rural and remote communities across Northern Canada provides access to the global economy and supports the North’s growing role in Arctic sovereignty.”
Northwestel is offering special incentives for returning home internet customers who are switching back from alternate providers. Eligible customers can receive up to a $50 credit per month for six months on any unlimited internet plan, waived installation fees, and TV Plus Lite and Crave included for up to six months, Northwestel said. More information about Northwestel’s reconnection incentives is available here.
This follows the CRTC’s approval of Northwestel’s proposed winback discounts on certain internet plans earlier this year.
