Telefilm investing $17.8M in 12 French-language feature films

Telefilm Canada announced last week the titles of 12 feature-length films receiving a total of $17.75 million in funding under its Production Program for the French market, in both the big-budget and low-budget streams.

The projects selected during the first application round for this year include comedies, dramas, historical dramas and children’s films. Of the 12 films, two are Canada-France coproductions and one is a Canada-Spain coproduction. The full list of films is available here.

The production funding for the selected projects represents 65 per cent of Telefilm’s annual budget for financing French-language films, according to a Telefilm press release. Telefilm said the balance of the budget will be allocated following the second application deadline. The second round of applications opens June 23 and closes July 7.

Telefilm said it continues to receive an increasing number of applications for its Production Program each year. To date, a total of 85 applications were assessed under the big-budget and low-budget streams in the French market, representing more than $131 million in funding requests, Telefilm said.

Other funding decisions, including film titles in the English-language market, will be announced in the coming weeks, Telefilm said.
