CBC reveals fall 2024 streaming and broadcast premiere dates for new and returning original series


CBC on Wednesday announced the streaming and broadcast premiere dates for its fall 2024 lineup of new and returning programming on CBC Gem and CBC TV, including more than 20 original series and specials from Canadian creators, producers and storytellers.

Following its world premiere at the Toronto International Film Festival 2024, award-winning Anishinaabe author Tanya Talaga’s docuseries The Knowing will premiere Sept. 25 at 8 p.m. (8:30 NT) on CBC and CBC Gem. Produced by Makwa Creative in association with CBC, the four-part series is adapted from Talaga’s book of the same name and directed by Talaga and Courtney Montour. In the series, Talaga “goes on a quest for the truth of what happened to the women in her maternal family, revealing a story intertwined with Canada’s Indian Residential School system,” reads a description in a CBC press release.

Also on CBC’s slate this fall is Paid In Full: The Battle for Black Music, a CBC and BBC co-commissioned docuseries from producers Idris and Sabrina Elba that “explores the systemic racism faced by Black artists in the music industry from its inception to the digital streaming age, and the artists’ ongoing fight for fair pay and racial justice,” the release says. Narrated by Canadian music icon Jully Black, Paid In Full premieres Sept. 21 on CBC Gem and will have its linear broadcast debut on CBC TV on Oct. 23 at 8 p.m. (8:30 NT).

Some of the series returning to CBC this fall will feature new additions to their casts. As previously announced by CBC, award-winning Canadian actor Paul Sun-Hyung Lee (Kim’s ConvenienceThe MandalorianAvatar: The Last Airbender) joins the cast of Murdoch Mysteries as the 18th season of the hit original series premieres on Sept. 30 on CBC Gem and on Oct. 7 at 8 p.m. (8:30 NT) on CBC TV. Lee plays the newly installed Inspector Albert Choi at Station House #4, alongside returning cast members Yannick Bisson as Detective William Murdoch, Jonny Harris as Constable George Crabtree and Thomas Craig as Chief Constable Thomas Brackenreid.

Premiering Sept. 26 at 8 p.m. (8:30 NT) on CBC TV, season 19 of Dragons’ Den will feature new Dragon Brian Scudamore, founder and CEO of 1-800-GOT-JUNK?, and celebrity Dragon Simu Liu (Kim’s ConvenienceShang-Chi and the Legend of the Ten RingsBarbie).

CBC News’ flagship investigative series The Fifth Estate marks its 50th anniversary season this fall, premiering Oct. 11 at 9 p.m. on CBC TV.

The Passionate Eye will return with a new season of thought-provoking original documentaries, starting Sept. 18 at 8 p.m. (8:30 NT) with 2024 Hot Docs Audience Award winner Yintah, following the Wet’suwet’en nation’s fight for sovereignty over the course of more than a decade. Subsequent episodes of The Passionate Eye will air weekly on Wednesdays at 9 p.m. (9:30 NT) beginning Sept. 25.

Debuting Sept. 13 on CBC Gem and on Sept. 18 at 11:30 p.m. (12 a.m. NT) on CBC TV, the third season of docuseries You Can’t Ask That “continues to provide a platform for disabled Canadians to speak candidly about their experiences,” CBC’s press release says.

Returning fan favourite CBC series include This Hour Has 22 Minutes (premiering Sept. 17 at 8 p.m./8:30 NT, and featuring a one-hour U.S. election special on Monday, Nov. 4 at 8 p.m./8:30 NT), The New Wave of Standup (Sept. 24 at 9:30 p.m./10 p.m. NT), Heartland (Sept. 29 on CBC Gem, Oct. 6 at 7 p.m./7:30 NT on CBC TV), The Great Canadian Baking Show (Oct. 6 at 8 p.m./8:30 NT), Still Standing (Oct. 8 at 8:30 p.m./9 p.m. NT) and Marketplace (Oct. 11 at 8 p.m./8:30 NT).

New CBC Kids originals this fall include the new preschool series Go Togo (premiering Sept. 2 on CBC TV and CBC Gem, airing Monday through Friday), and Playing With Stu (Sept. 2 on CBC Gem, Sept. 9 on CBC TV, airing Monday-Friday), which is a spinoff of Jeremy & Jazzy (second season debuting Sept. 2 on CBC Gem and Sept. 9 on CBC TV, airing Monday-Friday).
