Nearly 80 per cent of Canadian anglo households subscribe to SVOD services: MTM report

Nearly four out of five anglophone households (78 per cent) and more than seven out of 10 francophone households (72 per cent) in Canada subscribe to at least one subscription video-on-demand (SVOD) service, according to a new report released last week from the Media Technology Monitor, a research product of CBC/Radio-Canada.

While Netflix remains the most popular SVOD service, its share has declined, dropping to 52 per cent from 59 per cent among anglophones and to 60 per cent from a peak of 72 per cent among francophones in the fall of 2022, according to the MTM’s Gauging Demand for On Demand report.

Although SVOD services have become the preeminent way of subscribing to video content over the past decade, most SVOD subscribers also have a linear TV service subscription, the report says. Among anglophone households, 59 per cent of those with SVOD services also subscribe to a paid TV service (fibre, cable or satellite), and the figure is 71 per cent for francophone households, according to the report.

Looking at SVOD services that offer an advertising-supported tier, nearly 21 per cent of anglophone and 26 per cent of francophone Crave viewers choose a cheaper subscription option that includes ads, the report says. Similarly, 17 per cent of both anglophone and francophone Netflix subscribers opt for the ad-supported tier, as do 13 per cent of anglophone and 10 per cent of francophone Disney+ subscribers, the report adds.
