CMF invests over $8.5M in production funding in 15 indigenous projects

A further $7.7M to be invested in 26 documentary projects

The Canada Media Fund (CMF) announced last week an investment of more than $8.5 million in 15 indigenous projects through its Indigenous Program.

The selected projects include nine documentaries, four dramas, and two children and youth series. The production companies that are receiving funding include two in Alberta, five in Manitoba, four in Quebec, two in Nunavut and two in Saskatchewan.

The CMF’s Indigenous Program supports the growth of First Nation, Inuit and Métis production communities, acknowledging their unique challenges. Applications for funding through this program were evaluated by a jury composed of professionals from indigenous communities.

The CMF also announced an investment of more than $7.7 million in 26 documentary projects through its Point-of-View (POV) Program.

Of this amount, nearly $5.2 million will be invested in 15 English-language projects. The successful applicants receiving this funding are production companies based in British Columbia (one), Quebec (four) and Ontario (10).

In addition, nearly $2.6 million will be invested in 11 French-language documentaries. The selected production companies are all established in Quebec.

The POV Program is designed to encourage one-off, point-of-view documentary production for both English and French markets.
