Rogers trials Ericsson 5G cloud RAN technology during Blue Jays game on Canada Day

Rogers announced Tuesday it successfully trialled Ericsson’s 5G Cloud-Radio Access Network (Cloud RAN) technology during the Toronto Blue Jays game at Rogers Centre on Canada Day, marking the first time the technology has been deployed over a commercial network at a live event in Canada.

Rogers says this technology builds on its national standalone 5G core network, launched commercially in 2022.

“Cloud-native technology is a critical component in the next generation of wireless networks and we are proud to have completed Canada’s first deployment of 5G Cloud RAN technology at a major live event,” Ron McKenzie, chief technology and information officer at Rogers, said in a statement. “We continue to invest in our coast-to-coast radio access network, including innovative Cloud-native technologies, to deliver the most reliable, consistent network services across the country for both consumers and enterprise customers.”

The implementation of cloud-native technology will not only improve network reliability and resiliency, it will ultimately improve energy efficiency, create a foundation for 5G technological advancements, and enable Rogers to respond faster to wireless consumer and enterprise market demands, Rogers says in a press release.

Rogers’s commercial live event test of Ericsson’s 5G Cloud RAN technology follows the company’s successful test of 5G network slicing technology earlier this year, also conducted with its network partner Ericsson.
