Telus launches Mobility for Good for low-income families

Telus announced Thursday it has expanded its Mobility for Good program to low-income families.

The program provides families receiving the maximum Canada Child Benefit with a choice of two 5G+ plans: one with unlimited talk and text and 3 GB of data for $25 a month and another with same talk and text and 10 GB of data for $35. Speeds on the monthly alotment are up to 2 Gbps and then throttled afterward. Subscribers have the option of bringing their own device or buying a discounted, pre-owned device from Telus’s Mobile Klinik.

“In today’s increasingly digital world, ubiquitous and reliable access to connectivity has become a vital necessity for everyone in Canada to live, work and learn,” Jill Schnarr, Telus’s chief social innovation and communications and brand officer, said in the press release. “At a time where families are facing increasing financial hardships, TELUS remains committed to ensuring citizens from coast to coast can stay connected to the people and information that matter the most.”

Telus cited data pointing to the harmful effects of inflation on Canadian families, with 61 per cent having to adjust their day-to-day expenses to accommodate the rising cost of living.

Earlier this month, the Vancouver-based telco expanded the Mobility for Good program to indigenous women at risk.

The Mobility for Good program is one of a portfolio of programs under Telus’s Connecting for Good umbrella, which also includes internet, tech, and health services. These programs provide discounted connectivity solutions to other segments of the population, including youth aging out of foster care, low-income seniors and marginalized individuals.

Telus launched in 2016 the Internet for Good pilot to support low-income single-parent families across British Columbia.
