Corus original series Geek Girl to debut exclusively on StackTV in Canada

Corus Entertainment announced Tuesday its original young adult series Geek Girl will premiere May 30 exclusively on its multi-channel streaming service StackTV in Canada, with all 10 half-hour episodes available to stream on demand that day.

Based on British author Holly Smale’s novel of the same name, Geek Girl is a co-production between Toronto-based Aircraft Pictures and U.K.-based RubyRock Pictures, with creative support from Corus’s kids content producer Nelvana. The live-action series was filmed in the U.K. and Ottawa last summer.

Following its premiere on StackTV, Geek Girl will also air on Corus’s kids channel YTV in Canada this September, according to a press release. The series is also expected to debut soon in the U.S. on Netflix, which ordered the series along with Corus. Nelvana is distributing the series internationally.

Geek Girl is a coming-of-age series that follows 16-year-old Harriet Manners, played by Emily Carey (House of the DragonWonder Woman), whose life is turned upside down when she is discovered as a model and thrust head-first into the world of high fashion.

“Tightly wound agents, reclusive designers, impossibly high heels, and a cute supermodel boy with a great smile — socially awkward Harriet has no idea what she’s in for,” reads a synopsis in the press release.

“Modelled after Smale’s personal story, Harriet’s character is an innovative take on neurodivergent representation. Geek Girl champions being different, while challenging the traditional assumptions of what people who occupy glamorous spaces are like,” the release says.

The series cast also includes Emmanuel Imani (RichesThe Wheel of Time) as Wilbur Evans, Sarah Parish (IndustryStay Close) as Jude Paignton, Liam Woodrum (Love in Zion National) as Nick Park, Tim Downie (OutlanderPaddington) as Richard Manners, Zac Looker (A Kind of Spark) as Toby Pilgrim, Jemima Rooper (Flowers in the Attic: The Origin) as Annabel Manners, Sandra Yi Sencindiver (FoundationThe Wheel of Time) as Yuji Lee, Daisy Jelley (London Kills) as Poppy Hepple-Cartwright, and introduces Rochelle Harrington as Natalie Grey.

“The story of Geek Girl resonates with many people. High school is often a place of constant struggle for acceptance and Holly Smale offers a unique perspective on the experience,” Troy Reeb, executive vice president of broadcast networks for Corus Entertainment, said in the release. “We’re proud to deliver this Corus Original on STACKTV — the perfect streaming home for this binge-worthy series — which will not only engage fans of the novel but introduce this heartwarming story to new fans across Canada.”
