New CBC/Netflix/APTN comedy series North of North starts production in Nunavut


CBC, Netflix and APTN announced last week the start of production on North of North, a new comedy series that was announced in December and was formerly known as Untitled Arctic Comedy.

Now filming in Nunavut, North of North was co-commissioned by CBC and Netflix in association with APTN, and is being produced by Red Marrow Media and Northwood Entertainment.

Created and executive produced by Stacey Aglok MacDonald (QanurliThe Grizzlies) and Alethea Arnaquq-Baril (Angry InukThe Grizzlies), the series stars Anna Lambe (True Detective: Night CountryTrickster) as a young Inuk mother who “wants to build a new future for herself, but it won’t be easy in her small Arctic town where everyone knows your business,” a press release says.

Additional casting announced last week includes Mary Lynn Rajskub (It’s Always Sunny in Philadelphia24), Maika Harper (Mohawk GirlsBurden of Truth), Braeden Clarke (Little BirdOutlander), Jay Ryan (It: Chapter TwoMary Kills People), Kelly William (Portraits from a FireMotherland: Fort Salem), Zorga Qaunaq, Doreen Simmonds (True Detective: Night Country), and Tanya Tagaq (BootleggerThoroughbreds). As previously announced, seven-year-old Inuk actress Keira Cooper will play the daughter of Lambe’s character.

Other executive producers of North of North include Miranda de Pencier (Anne with an EBeginnersThe Grizzlies), Anya Adams (YellowjacketsGinny & Georgia), Susan Coyne (Mozart in the JungleDaisy Jones & The Six), and Garry Campbell (The Kids in the HallLess Than Kind). Directors include Anya Adams, Danis Goulet (Night Raiders), Zoe Leigh Hopkins (Little Bird), Lisa Jackson (Savage), Renuka Jeyapalan (Kim’s Convenience), and Aleysa Young (Baroness Von Sketch Show).

“We’ve already survived a blizzard during prep, so there’s no doubt our amazing cast and crew is ready to shoot a show in the Arctic,” said Aglok MacDonald and Arnaquq-Baril in a statement. “Also, a huge nakurmiik to our community of Iqaluit for being so welcoming — we couldn’t do this show without your support!”
