REGINA – SaskTel announced Wednesday it recently launched 5G on more than 40 additional cell sites serving communities and highway corridors across Saskatchewan.
The provincial Crown corporation’s latest expansion “is part of SaskTel’s ongoing initiative to deliver next-generation and hyper-fast wireless connectivity to residents and businesses throughout Saskatchewan,” reads a press release.
“Currently, SaskTel’s 5G network can deliver data speeds of up to 1.2 Gigabits per second (Gbps), and as it matures the network will provide significantly faster speeds,” the release says.
The communities and areas that have recently been upgraded to SaskTel 5G service include Allan, Balcarres, Balgonie, Biggar, Broadview, Caronport, Grass Lake, Gray, Grenfell, Hague, Humboldt, Insinger, Katepwa Beach, Lanigan, Lashburn, McLean, Moosomin, Morse, Outlook, Pasqua Lake (South), Redwing, Rocanville Mine, Rosetown, Secretan, Tisdale, Unity, Wapella, Wilcox (Northeast) and Wynyard.
Highway sections newly upgraded to SaskTel 5G service include Highway 1 (east of Emerald Park; east of the Saskatchewan/Alberta border; south of Pense; and west of Whitewood), Highway 3 (west of Prince Albert), Highway 7 (northeast of Harris), Highway 9 (south of Yorkton), Highway 10 (west of Lorlie), Highway 16 (east of Foam Lake), Highway 39 (northeast of Roche Percee), Highway 102 (north of La Ronge) and Highway 644 (north of Morse).
“We recognize the true potential of 5G and are tirelessly working to bring this new and powerful technology to our customers across the province,” Charlene Gavel, SaskTel president and CEO, said in the press release. “With this latest expansion, we are thrilled that more of our customers across the province will now be able to connect to each other and the world faster than ever before.”
“Our government recognizes how important advanced communication networks and technologies have become to the success of our people and province as a whole,” said Dustin Duncan, the province’s new minister responsible for SaskTel. “The significant investments being made by SaskTel in 5G and fibre technologies will help strengthen the networks we rely on and ensure Saskatchewan remains one of the most well connected regions in the country.”
The continued expansion of SaskTel’s 5G and fibre networks are a direct result of SaskTel’s commitment to invest more than $1.6 billion of capital across the province over the next five years, the release says.
