Telefilm earmarks $6M in production funding for 13 films in the English market

MONTREAL – Telefilm Canada announced Monday a $6-million total funding commitment to 13 feature-length films in the English market under its Production Program, as part of the second round of selections in the program’s low budget minority co-production and big budget streams.

All but two of the feature films selected during this funding round are co-productions between Canada and other countries.

The exclusively Canadian productions are: the drama Neverman, directed by Rodrigo Barriuso, co-written by Barriuso and Kyah Green, produced by Hawkeye Pictures Inc. and distributed by Sphere Films; and a comedy with the working title Untitled Matt Johnson Project, directed and co-written by Matt Johnson, co-written by Jay McCarrol, produced by Zapruder Films Inc. and distributed by Elevation Pictures. Both films are being produced in Ontario.

Of the 11 co-productions selected for funding, five are being produced in Ontario, three in Quebec, one in Ontario and Quebec, one in Manitoba and one in Saskatchewan.

Co-producing partner countries include Iceland, France, Venezuela, Mexico, South Africa, Ireland, Serbia, Bulgaria, Slovakia, Croatia, Israel and Germany.

Telefilm says in its press release more production funding decisions will be announced in the coming weeks, and all statistics on films funded in this fiscal year will be released when all funding decisions have been made.

In April, Telefilm announced the selection of 12 feature-length films in the English market receiving a total of $23 million in funding under the Production Program’s big budget stream.
