Telus announces billions in investments across three provinces

VANCOUVER – Telus announced Tuesday that it will invest roughly $77 billion over the next five years on infrastructure and connectivity across the provinces of British Columbia, Alberta and Ontario.

The commitment is part of the $81 billion it expects to spent across Canada by 2027, it said in a press release.

In its home province, the telecom said it is putting $18.5 billion toward initiatives including expanding the reach of its 5G network by deploying more 3.5 GHz spectrum, expanding its healthcare and smart home product businesses, and driving more fibre to homes. It said its PureFibre product will connect over 100,000 more homes and businesses in the province this year.

In Alberta, it is putting $19 billion toward additional fibre connections, including “thousands” more homes and businesses this year, and expanding its 5G network, smart home and agricultural initiatives and sustainability targets.

In Ontario, the telecom is putting $28 billion toward expanding its 5G network, smart home, agriculture and sustainability initiatives, and its healthcare products, which goes to support occupational, financial and mental health services.

On Wednesday, the telecom announced $11.5 billion in investments in Quebec, which include 5G expansion in rural areas and connecting thousands more homes and businesses to its fibre network.

The company has already invested billions of dollars in the provinces, which factor into the $240 billion it spent nationwide since 2000, it said.

The announcement comes as Rogers integrates Shaw, Telus’s west coast rival, and as it prepares for the competition from Quebec player Videotron in western Canada.
