SaskTel begins 5G rollout in more cities

REGINA – SaskTel announced Monday that parts of three cities can begin to use the company’s 5G network.

The crown corporation said the majority of Estevan, Weyburn and Yorkton will have 5G coverage by the end of March 2024.

“Our government is pleased with the work SaskTel is doing to rapidly expand its 5G network across the province,” Don Morgan, minister responsible for SaskTel, said in a press release. “With this latest expansion, thousands of our residents and businesses can now begin to take advantage and benefit from one of the most advanced wireless networks available anywhere in the country.”

SaskTel said the network can deliver speeds of 1.2 Gbps, with faster speeds coming as it “matures.”

“As we lean into a more connected future, SaskTel’s 5G network will provide our customers with extremely fast data speeds, and real-time connectivity that will make day to day activities easier while also helping to unlock the potential of innovative smart technologies,” Doug Burnett, SaskTel president and CEO, said in the release.

The company announced in March that it will invest roughly $413 million in the province over the 2023/2024 year beginning April 1 this year and more than $1.6 billion over the next five years.
