
VANCOUVER – Former deputy prime minister John Manley has been appointed chair of the Telus board of directors.
The long-time board member is succeeding Dick Auchinleck, who is retiring after 20 years, according to a press release today.
“John’s appointment as our new Board Chair is a testament to our robust succession planning process,” Darren Entwistle, president and CEO of TELUS, said in the release. “Over the course of his tenure on our Board, John has demonstrated exceptional professionalism, thought leadership and integrity, playing a key role in TELUS’ industry-leading growth strategy. We look forward to his continued contribution with his expertise, insightful guidance and deep understanding of our industry. This leadership progression will enable our continued success in our highly competitive and dynamic marketplace.”
Manley is currently a senior business advisor with law firm Bennett Jones, was previously the president and CEO of the Business Council of Canada from 2010 to 2018, and formerly chaired the board of CIBC and aviation and aerospace company CAE.
His political career spanned many years, with minister positions in what is now called Innovation Canada, foreign affairs and finance. First elected in 1993, he was deputy prime minister under Jean Chretien from the beginning of 2002 to late 2003.
He has a bachelor’s degree from Carleton University in mathematics and political science and a law degree from the University of Ottawa.
