
HURON COUNTY – The federal and Ontario governments are plowing $3.8 million into high-speed internet projects to service more than 1,570 families, farms and businesses in Huron County, according to a press release Friday.
Each government is putting $1.6 million toward communities including Summerhill, Henfryn, Thames Road, Lumley, Hurondale, Wroxeter, Gorrie, Fordwich, Benmiller and rural areas near Blue Water Beach, with the latter two expected to see 310 families, farms and businesses get access to high-speed internet by June 2023, according to the release. An additional $676,000 will go toward broadband infrastructure to more than 170 families, farms and businesses in the community of Marnoch.
The contracts were initiated by the local municipalities to bring connectivity to areas of Southwestern Ontario and comes from the non-profit corporation Southwestern Integrated Fibre Technology (SWIFT), which has been injected with more than $63 million from Ontario and the federal government.
The federal and Ontario governments and private sector partners have invested more than $255 million to bring high-speed internet to more than 63,000 households and businesses in the region through SWIFT by the end of 2025, which is the province’s goal timeline to connect all of Ontario.
