
Feds also announce $1.5 million to connect 1,046 homes in the province
OTTAWA – The federal government today announced a new partnership with the province of Prince Edward Island, which will see them jointly invest up to $20 million to bring high-speed Internet to all underserved homes in rural communities throughout the province.
Each government will contribute up to $10 million, which will help connect approximately 2,000 homes in the province.
“Both the governments of Canada and Prince Edward Island will work with local communities, including Indigenous communities, to achieve the national target of connecting 98% of Canadians by 2026 and 100% by 2030,” a press release explains.
“Prince Edward Island’s plan accelerates this work, with a provincial target of 95% of the province connected by 2023 and 100% by 2025.” More details will be announced over the coming months.
Additionally, the federal government announced it is investing over $1.5 million in funding from the UBF “for Island Telecom and Xplornet to bring high-speed Internet to over 1,046 homes in Prince Edward Island,” the press release says. “This funding will benefit 56 communities in the province.”
According to a government backgrounder, Island Telecom is to receive $445,395 to connect 150 homes in Freetown, Lower Freetown, South Freetown, Newton and North Bedeque.
Island Telecom is also to receive $247,485 to connect 106 homes in Union Road, Brackley, Clinton, Norboro, Springfield and Kensington.
Finally, Xplornet is to receive $884,000 to connect 790 homes in Anglo Tignish, Annandale, Arlington, Belfast, Belle River, Burton, Cable Head East, Cable Head West, Campbellton, Cape Wolfe, Cap-Egmont, Central Kildare, Chepstow, East Point, Farmington, Flat River, Forest Hill, Gaspereaux, Georgetown Royalty, Goose River, Grahams Road, Granville, Harmony, Head Of Cardigan, Kildare Capes, Long River, Milltown Cross, Millvale, New London, North Enmore, Park Corner, Poplar Point, Portage, Rock Barra, Seacow Pond, Springhill, St Margarets, St Marys Road, St Patricks, St Peters Harbour, St-Chrysostome, Victoria West, Waterford, West St Peters and Wood Islands.
