Shaw donates $1M to support youth charities in Alberta

CALGARY – Shaw Communications today announced it is donating $1 million to support over 260 youth charities in Alberta to kick off the 10th anniversary of the Shaw Charity Classic.

The donation will help support the charities through Shaw Birdies for Kids presented by AltaLink, which is the tournament’s charitable giving platform.

The Shaw Charity Classic, which is the PGA TOUR Champions’ only Canadian stop, has raised $76 million for over 230 Alberta-based children and youth charities over its first nine years, according to a press release.

Shaw also announced it is bringing back Chip in for Kids, which allows Canadians to donate $10 to the participating charity of their choice by sending a text message with a unique code to 30333.

“Shaw will match every donation made through the campaign, up to a total of $150,000,” the release says, adding that donations “made directly to a participating charity by Aug. 31 will also be matched by the Shaw Charity Classic Foundation – meaning a $10 donation has the potential to grow into $30.”

A list of participating charities is available here.

“During the pandemic, we built Shaw Chip in for Kids to be a platform to continue supporting the charitable organizations that needed it more than ever,” said Brad Shaw, executive chair and CEO of Shaw, in the press release.

“With the tournament only a couple months away, we want to ensure Canadians have every opportunity to show their support for the organizations that continue to make our communities better for everyone.”

The Shaw Charity Classic will be held from Aug. 1-7 this year at Canyon Meadows Golf and Country Club in Calgary.
