MONTREAL — Bell Media announced today a new original documentary series exploring the unique journey of trans people going through the surgical process of gender affirmation, Un nouveau jour (A New Day), will premiere on Crave starting May 11.
“Often born in a body that made them unhappy, they are about to experience one of the most significant events of their lives,” reads an English translation of Bell Media’s French press release.
Comprised of eight 30-minute episodes, the docuseries “offers a sensitive look at the reality of trans people accompanied by the staff of the GrS Montréal hospital, whose expertise is unique in the world,” the release says.
The series is directed by Émilie Ricard-Harvey and is produced by Urbania in collaboration with Bell Media.
“For the first time since its opening in 1973, GrS Montréal, the only hospital centre specializing in gender affirmation surgery in the country, opens its doors in the documentary series Un nouveau jour,” the translated release says.
“The clinic’s professionals and surgeons help trans and non-binary clients from all over the world on a daily basis to take an important step in their transition. The series also allows a unique look at the surgical prowess accomplished on site.”
“The Un nouveau jour team obtained unprecedented access to a hospital centre specializing in transaffirmative surgeries,” said Suzanne Landry, vice-president of content development, programming and information at Bell Media, in the English translation of the release.
“We would like to thank the patients for allowing us to present a reality that is still little discussed. That’s what we’re looking for with Crave’s documentary series: to offer true and unique perspectives on the world, on realities that are sometimes overlooked.”
