CTV Vancouver layoffs latest in long list of recent Bell Media job cuts

VANCOUVER – News has been circulating around the Twittersphere of more Bell Media job cuts.

Scott Roberts (above left), co-anchor of CTV Vancouver’s CTV News at Six, Luisa Alvarez (centre), CTV Morning Live traffic and segment host and Olivia Jones (right), midday show host on Move stations in four markets, all confirmed on the social networking site they have been laid off by Bell Media.

Roberts joined CTV News Vancouver’s newsroom in 2012, according to the network’s website. During his time there, he won multiple awards including two Edward R. Murrow Awards in 2020 and a Jack Webster Award.

“Tough day,” he said in a tweet last night. “Had a good 15 year run at CTV, but unfortunately layoffs are part of a difficult business climate for journalism. Wishing all my colleagues the very best. Continue doing important work.”

Alvarez joined CTV News Vancouver in 2019, the network’s website says, and she previously worked as a video journalist and weekend anchor in Thunder Bay and as a TV news reporter in Victoria.

“I didn’t know it when I got to work this morning but today was my last show for CTV Morning Live and my last day at Bell Media,” she said in a note shared on Twitter last night. “I started at CTV back [in] 2019 as a video journalist and then became the traffic host. I know it wasn’t a long time but it was a great time…”

Jones had been a midday show host for Bell Media’s Move Vancouver, Move Kelowna, Move Penticton and Move Fort St. John for 11 years, and a weather caster on CTV Morning Live for a year, according to her LinkedIn page. Before that, she worked for six years as a radio host on The Beat 94.5.

“After 17 years, today was my last day with Bell Media,” she tweeted last night. “From the Beat Street Squad to hosting the Midday Show on Move 103.5 in 4 markets and fill-in weather caster on CTV Morning Live, it’s been an incredible run.”

Bell Media also made a series of job cuts last year in January, February and August.

Cartt.ca reached out to the company for more information about this latest round of cuts, including about how many people were laid off.

A Bell Media spokesperson only said: “Out of respect for the privacy of our employees, we do not comment on staffing related matters.”
