OTTAWA – François-Philippe Champagne, Minister of Innovation, Science and Industry, announced today the government has published the latest quarter (July-September) of wireless pricing data for plans ranging from 2GB to 6GB, which shows the prices for such plans have decreased since early 2020.
“The latest data shows that prices for most mid-range plans have decreased by between 10% and 25% compared to the benchmark prices collected in early 2020 and that prices of mid-range data plans are continuing to move in the right direction,” a government press release says.
In July, the government announced prices for plans in the 2GB to 6GB range were down 9% to 25% from the benchmarks.
Canada’s three major wireless providers as well as their flanker brands are expected, over a two-year period ending in March 2022, to offer plans in the range of 2-6GB that are 25% cheaper than the benchmarks set in early 2020.
“Access to high-quality and affordable wireless services is no longer a luxury for Canadians,” said Champagne, in the today’s press release.
“In my role as minister, my priority is to improve affordability, competition and innovation in the wireless services available to Canadians from coast to coast to coast. This report shows important progress toward our goals, but there remains significant work to be done.”
