CBC SPORTS AND U SPORTS announced today they have reached a four-year agreement for the exclusive English-language digital broadcast rights for U Sports national championships.
The Canadian university sports organization “also announced Monday that CBC Sports will be the English television home of the 56th Vanier Cup at Université Laval’s TELUS-UL Stadium on Dec. 4,” a press release says.
“Today, is the first step towards reshaping coverage of university sport in Canada,” said John Bower, director of marketing and communications at U Sports, in the press release.
“U SPORTS look forward to growing our audience with CBC so that the performances and stories of our student-athletes reach the widest possible audience.”
This year, CBC will cover all 19 national championships, compared to six two years ago.
The championships “offer the opportunity for audiences to see some of the top high-performance athletes in the country in action on a national stage,” said Chris Wilson, executive director of Sports and Olympics at CBC, in the press release.
“We’re proud to further enhance our commitment to gender-balanced sports coverage with this equal slate of men’s and women’s championship events, and we look forward to sharing the athletes’ stories across our digital platforms over the next four years.”
Digital coverage will be available on cbcsports.ca, CBC Gem and the CBC Sports app for iOS and Android devices, the press release says.
