CityWest expanding to Haida Gwaii

HAIDA GWAII – CityWest announced today it is expanding its services to Haida Gwaii through B.C.’s Connecting British Columbia program.

“Over the next few months, the company will begin its first stages of expansion into the communities of Masset, Old Massett, the Village of Daajing Giids (Queen Charlotte), HlGaagilda (Skidegate), TlLaal (Tlell), and Taaw Tldaaw (Tow Hill),” a press release says.

The first stage of the expansion involves CityWest “going directly to the doors and mailboxes of residents in some communities on Haida Gwaii, to sign them up for their installation, and ask permission to bury a “drop” on their property.”

Customers will then have access to fibre-to-the-home services once “the Connected Coast project brings bandwidth to the island,” the release says.

In the press release, CityWest acknowledged the company “will be working and expanding services on the unceded traditional territories of the Haida Nation.”

CityWest has worked closely with B.C.’s provincial government and the communities of Haida Gwaii on this project.
