Bell specialty shows top the 25-54 age group, says Numeris data (updated, since Corus adds: not so fast…)


TORONTO – Bell Media announced yesterday its specialty channels and programs were some of the most popular with adults aged 25-54 for the 2020-21 broadcast year on entertainment specialty TV, according to Numeris data.

Bell had five channels rank in the top ten entertainment specialty channels for the age group including CTV Comedy, Discovery, CTV Drama, CTV Sci-Fi Channel and Much, according to a press release.

Furthermore, Bell had four of the top 10 most-watched series on entertainment specialty TV in 2020-21 for adults 25-54.

According to data provided to Cartt.ca by Bell, Star Trek: Discovery on CTV Sci-Fi ranked in the number one spot with an average minute audience (AMA) of 313,000; Discovery’s Gold Rush ranked as number four with an AMA of 212,000; The Handmaids Tale on CTV Drama was number five with an AMA of 201,000; and Resident Alien on CTV Sci-Fi was number six with an AMA of 193,000.

Bell specialty channels had a further six shows in the top 20 including Deadliest Catch (161,000), Star Trek: Lower Decks (159,000), Gold Rush: White Water (156,000), Highway Thru Hell (149,000), Homestead Rescue: Home Sweet Homestead (140,000) and Alaskan Bush People (127,000).

A Corus spokesperson told Cartt.ca via email that, according to Numeris data, Corus had more specialty stations in the top 10 for adults 25-54 and females 25-54 (including sports and news) over the past year than any other broadcaster. Top performing stations include W Network, HGTV, History, Showcase, and Food Network.

Individual specialty programs that have been successful with adults 25-54 include Island of Bryan, which was the number one specialty entertainment program in the spring with an AMA of 313,900 and Curse of Oak Island, which was the number one overall specialty entertainment program in the fall with an AMA of 335,600 and number two in the spring with an AMA of 275,000.

Corus had more top 20 specialty entertainment programs in the fall and spring among A25-54 and F25-54 than any other broadcaster, according to the Corus spokesperson. Furthermore, Corus stations make up three quarters of lifestyle station viewing, over half of drama specialty station viewing, 40% of factual specialty station viewing and just under half of young adult specialty station viewing, the spokesperson said.

Popular entertainment specialty shows in the fall from Corus for adults 25-54 include Secrets of Skin Walker Ranch (186,400), Saved By the Bell (182,900), Why Women Kill (177,500), Beyond Oak Island (159,400), Celebrity IOU (156,500), Brave New World (149,700), W Sat Night Movies (141,900), Forged in Fire: Beat the Judges (126,900), Counting Cars (122,500) and Halloween Baking Championship (119,400).

Popular entertainment specialty shows in the spring include Vikings (134,100), Rock Solid Builds (116,200), Top Chef Canada (111,400), Top Chef (111,300), Assembly Required (102,700), Rust Valley Restorers (101,800), Batwoman (100,600), W Sat Night Movies (96,400) and Punky Brewster (96,100).
