ST. JOHNS – CBC and Lionsgate announced today they have partnered up with Schitt’s Creek producer Andrew Barnsley and comedian-actor-writer Mark Critch on a new comedy series, Son of a Critch, created by Critch and Tim McAuliffe (The Office, Lase Man on Earth).
Based on Critch’s best-selling memoir, Son of a Critch “is the hilarious and very real story of 11-year-old Mark coming of age in St. John’s, Newfoundland in the 80s,” says a press release. “It’s a heartfelt window into the life of a child – much older inside than his 11 years – using comedy and self-deprecation to win friends and connect with the small collection of people in his limited world.”
Son of a Critch “stars Mark Critch as his father and Benjamin Evan Ainsworth (Pinocchio) as young Mark,” the release says. Other cast members announced include Claire Rankin (Molly’s Game), Malcolm McDowell (A Clockwork Orange) and newcomers Sophia Powers and Mark Rivera.
The show “is an inter-provincial co-production between Barnsley’s Project 10 Productions Inc. and Newfoundland-based Take the Shot Productions in association with CBC and Lionsgate Television, and executive produced by Critch, McAuliffe, Barnsley, Ben Murray and Allan Hawco,” according to the press release. Renuka Jeyapalan and Anita Kapila are co-executive producers with Jeyapalan set to direct the show’s first four episodes.
Son of a Critch, which is set to air in Canada on CBC TV and CBC Gem in January 2022, began production today in St. Johns. Lionsgate is handling U.S. and international distribution rights.
