Shaw and Rogers fastest fixed broadband providers in Q2, says Ookla


Telus fastest mobile operator during the quarter

SEATTLE — Shaw Communications and Rogers Communications were the fastest fixed broadband providers in Canada in the second quarter of 2021, according to Seattle-based broadband and mobile network testing company Ookla, which released its Q2 2021 Canada Market Report today.

Using Speedtest Intelligence data from the second quarter, Ookla gave Shaw and Rogers speed scores of 181.66 and 179.95, respectively, for their fixed broadband network performance. Ookla’s speed score incorporates measurements of each provider’s download and upload speeds to rank network speed performance, with 90% of the final score being attributed to download speed.

According to Ookla, Rogers topped Shaw for the highest consistency score in Canada during Q2 2021 by earning a score of 89% compared to Shaw’s 87%.

In terms of mobile network performance, Telus retained its top spot as the fastest mobile operator in Canada during the second quarter of 2021, achieving a speed score of 82.93 (see chart below).

Videotron also retained its top spot as Canada’s most consistent mobile operator, with a consistency score of 89.6%.

Rogers achieved the highest 5G availability in Canada during Q2 2021, according to Ookla.
