CALGARY — Shaw Communications announced today Suncor will be the first presenting sponsor of its Shaw Charity Classic golf tournament which, after being cancelled last year due to Covid-19, is returning to Calgary in August.
“The Shaw Charity Classic presented by Suncor promises to play a key role in building our community back stronger from the pandemic,” said Sean Van Kesteren, the tournament’s executive director, in a press release.
Since its inception in 2013, the Shaw Charity Classic has raised more than $61.1 million for Alberta youth charities, primarily through its Shaw Birdies for Kids presented by AltaLink charitable program.
“Over the past eight years, the Shaw Charity Classic has had a significant impact on hundreds of charitable organizations working every day to improve the lives of children and youth across Alberta, and adding Suncor as our first presenting sponsor will make the tournament’s impact much more profound,” said Brad Shaw, executive chair and CEO of Shaw Communications.
The Shaw Charity Classic is the only Canadian stop on the PGA Tour Champions circuit, and will take place at Calgary’s Canyon Meadows Golf and Country Club from August 13-15. Earlier in the week, the club will also host Blakes Women’s Day on August 9, and the RBC Championship Pro-Am from August 11-12.
The tournament’s safe-return-to-play plan will include updated quarantine requirements, testing protocols for players, caddies and other event personnel prior to arrival and during their time in Calgary, and sanitization stations and distancing measures to ensure the safety of all those permitted at Canyon Meadows. Two thousand spectators will be allowed for each day of the three-day tournament, which this year will see 81 golf stars of the PGA Tour Champions competing.
The tournament will be televised on the Golf Channel.
