29 community and campus radio stations receive CRFC funding

OTTAWA — The Community Radio Fund of Canada (CRFC) today announced 29 community and campus stations have been selected to receive funding through the CRFC’s 2021-2022 Radiometres program.

Launched in 2012, the Radiometres program supports projects which focus on: access to local news and information; supporting community music and expression; transitioning to emerging programming distribution technologies; and sustainability and capacity-building at community radio stations.

Funding distributed through the CRFC’s Radiometres program comes from commercial radio stations through their Canadian Content Development (CCD) contributions. The program awards up to $50,000 in funding to each successful applicant, according to the program’s 2021-2022 guidelines.

One of the recipients, Ryerson Radio (CJRU) in Toronto, will use the funding to produce its Radio Everywhere: A Community Radio Series, says the CRFC’s press release.

“With everything that’s happened in the past year plus, we see the vital role that campus and community radio can play in our communities,” said Elissa Matthews, station manager of CJRU Toronto, in the release.

Radio Everywhere: A Community Radio Series is an opportunity to continue to grow our relationships and support the creation of radio pieces produced by the community.”

Other projects to receive funding include an Indigenous radio documentary, Documenting Decolonization 2, produced by CFUV, a campus radio station in Victoria, B.C., and a program by CHRY in North York, which will work to reduce barriers to broadcasting and create accessible opportunities for underrepresented BIPOC (black, Indigenous and people of colour) artists, says the release.
