Eisner-backed streamer’s first has Canada in its sights as first international launch; no date yet
TORONTO — Firstlight Media announced today its cloud-native platform is being used to support the U.S. launch of the Struum streaming service created by former Disney and Discovery executives, including former Disney CEO Michael Eisner.
Yesterday, Struum launched a live preview of its service via the iOS App store, Chromecast and web browsers, supported by Firstlight Media’s cloud-based OTT platform.
“The Firstlight Media platform, built on Gen5 architecture, harnesses an array of cloud-native technologies that allows Struum to aggregate and make available content from around the world, to enable content providers to maintain their own brands within the Struum ecosystem, and to drive personalization across the full range of networks — all while supporting Struum’s novel, credits-based business model,” explains a press release issued today from Toronto-based Firstlight Media.
Strum has finalized deals with more than 50 services and content providers to make their programming available on the streaming service, with more than 25 of those available during the early preview period. Initial partners include Tastemade, Tribeca, Cheddar News, Kocowa, Dekkoo, Magellan TV, History Hit, Gusto, Young Hollywood, Indieflix, SPI/FilmBox, Echoboom Sports, Social Club TV, Cinedigm, Magnolia Pictures, Little Dot Studios, Group 9, Stingray and Filmhub.
By summer, Firstlight Media is expected to be supporting availability of more than 50 Struum services on a single cloud-native platform, says Firstlight’s press release.
Struum says its early sneak peek will be followed by a full rollout of the app later this summer across more platforms including AppleTV, Android TV, Android, Amazon Fire TV and Roku.
Timing for a Canadian launch of the Struum service has not been announced, although it is anticipated Canada will be its first international launch, according to a spokesperson from one of Struum’s content partners, SPI International/FilmBox.
