Telus investing $16 million to expand in Lower St. Lawrence region

RIMOUSKI — Telus Communications announced today it is investing $16 million in the Lower St. Lawrence region of Quebec this year to deploy its PureFibre and 5G networks.

In addition, thanks to a $1-million contribution from the governments of Quebec and Canada, Telus has completed the deployment of its high-speed services in the Mitis regional county municipality (RCM), and 1,800 additional families and businesses have direct access to Telus’s PureFibre network, the company says in its press release.

With its own investments, Telus will deploy its 5G mobile service in six additional Lower St. Lawrence communities in 2021, including in the Mitis and Matapédia RCMs, in addition to the municipalities of Rimouski and Matane, adds Telus.

“To date, 93% of businesses and families in the area we serve have access to our PureFibre network, and we are pursuing our joint investment with the goal of connecting all premises to high-speed Internet by September 2022,” said Marie-Christine D’Amours, Telus vice-president of consumer solutions and customer experience for Quebec.

According to a press release issued today by ISED Canada, Telus is receiving $874,785 in funding through the Canada-Quebec Operation High Speed program to connect 310 households in the Mitis RCM to Telus’s high-speed Internet services by September 2022. This project, valued at $1.67 million, is accelerating the deployment of high-speed broadband infrastructure in the municipalities of Grand-Métis, Métis-sur-Mer, Mont-Joli, Sainte-Flavie and Sainte-Luce, says the government’s press release.

Telus says in its release, with the collaboration of the governments, in 2022 the company will continue to deploy PureFibre to homes and businesses in Saint-Mathieu-de-Rioux and Saint-Narcisse-de-Rimouski.

As part of the Canada-Quebec Operation High Speed program, the provincial and federal governments have granted Telus $26 million to help deploy high-speed Internet to almost 5,000 households. Telus is making an additional investment to connect 25,000 additional families and businesses to the PureFibre network by fall 2022 in eastern Quebec, the Capitale-Nationale, Chaudière-Appalaches, Mauricie, and Estrie regions.
