LAMBTON COUNTY, Ont. — The Ontario government announced today construction has begun on a broadband infrastructure project that will provide improved Internet service to more than 570 households and businesses in Lambton County.
Funded through the Southwestern Integrated Fibre Technology (SWIFT) organization, the $5.9 million in broadband improvements will benefit the communities of Wanstead, Rokeby, Walnut and Sutorville, located east of Sarnia.
The governments of Canada and Ontario have each committed more than $385,000 to fund the broadband network expansions, with the total funding awarded by SWIFT amounting to just over $3.3 million, which includes $2.6 million contributed by the County of Lambton.
Brooke Telecom is receiving the funding to deploy fibre along 141 kms of underserved roads within the county, with completion of the projects expected by the end of 2022, according to information posted on SWIFT’s approved projects webpage. The awarding of the contract to Brooke Telecom was first announced in August 2020.
“Today in partnership with the governments of Ontario and Canada, we are pleased to announce that SWIFT’s efforts to expand broadband service in Lambton County continues to move forward as work is now underway to bring greater connectivity to an additional 578 homes and businesses within the municipality,” said SWIFT board chair Gary McNamara, in the government’s press release.
