Canadians watched a lot of live TV in the fall


TORONTO — Canadian adults 18+ watched 24 hours of linear television per week on average this past fall, with adults in the 18-34 demographic viewing more than 10 hours of TV per week, most of it live, according to the latest viewing trends report from TV marketing and research association thinktv.

Based on Numeris data, the report provides a look at what Canadians were watching in the period from October 26, 2020 to January 10, 2021.

Here are some of the highlights from the report:

  • Jeopardy aired its last episode hosted by the late, great Alex Trebek on January 8. More than three million Canadians (2+) tuned in to see his last week of episodes and to say goodbye to the television legend.
  • Grey’s Anatomy’s 17th season reached 10 million Canadians (2+) over its first two episodes.
  • Quebec’s perennial favourite New Year’s Eve special Bye Bye celebrated with 4.7 million Quebec Francophones (2+).
  • District 31 continued its run as not just the top French-language show, but a top five show in all of Canada.
  • The Toronto Raptors’ regular-season start on December 23 drove ratings across all age groups.
  • The 2021 World Junior Hockey Championship reached more than 14 million Canadian fans.
  • The U.S. election was of significant interest to Canadians, who turned to television to stay up to date with the latest developments, resulting in a massive spike in viewing during election week.
