Pier 21 Films bolsters development team with two appointments

TORONTO — Pier 21 Films (the production company behind political satire series The Beaverton) today announced it has made two new appointments in its development division.

Former CBC executive Karen Tsang (right) has been hired as Pier 21 Films’ new vice-president of development, and Bill Lundy has been promoted to senior vice-president of development. Both will report to the company’s chief operating officer, Nicole Butler.

Lundy and Tsang will collaborate on Pier 21 Films’ development projects as well as expand the company’s reach for developing new intellectual property while continuing to grow relationships with networks in Canada and internationally, says the news release announcing their appointments.

Before joining Pier 21 Films, Tsang spent eight years working in scripted content at the CBC. In her most recent role as executive in charge of production for comedy at the CBC, Tsang oversaw the creative development and production of more than 150 episodes of original television series including five seasons of the Rose d’Or and Rockie Award winning Baroness von Sketch Show. Her slate also included TallBoyz, Mr. D and This Hour Has 22 Minutes.

Lundy joined Pier 21 Films in 2018 as vice-president of development. Previously, he worked at Bell Media developing and producing comedic series for the broadcaster including The Beaverton, Letterkenny and Just For Laughs: All Access.

“Karen has an incredible passion for creator driven stories and amplifying new creative voices,” said Butler, in the news release. “Adding Karen’s vision to our team and promoting Bill, who has been the key driver in ramping up our development roster amid the Covid-19 pandemic, allows Pier 21 even more scope to support talent and champion exciting new projects.”

Despite the pandemic, Pier 21 Films has strengthened its position in comedy, landing four new half-hour projects in development featuring a diverse talent roster including Emma Hunter (The Beaverton) and Andrew Phung (Kim’s Convenience), says the release.
