SHENZHEN, China — Telecom equipment and smartphone manufacturer ZTE Corporation today introduced its new ZTE Axon 20 5G device (pictured), calling it the world’s first under-display camera smartphone. The camera is available for pre-order only in China.
According to the company’s news release, ZTE’s breakthrough in the under-display camera functionality is powered by five core technologies: high-transparency materials that improve the light input to the device’s front camera; built-in independent dual-control chips and integrated driver circuits employed to enable colour synchronization between the front camera and the conventional display; a special matrix that optimizes pixels and improves display consistency; and a front-camera selfie algorithm which optimizes the performance of the camera under several lighting conditions and supports automatic dynamic range adjustment.
In addition, ZTE has leveraged other under-display technologies, including ambient light, sound, and fingerprint sensors to achieve a true full screen without any punch holes, says the release. The innovative light sensor can automatically adjust the screen brightness in accordance to the light environment, allowing the display to be seen clearly anytime.
“ZTE Axon 20 5G marks the beginning of ZTE’s new product strategy,” Ni Fei, president of ZTE mobile devices, in the release. “Smartphones will serve as our core area of product innovation. Meanwhile, we will also be committed to developing personal and family mobile broadband products, smart wearable devices, and other new products that enable a smart life seamlessly connected to 5G scenarios.”
