Telefilm suspends use of success index, resumes national consultation

TORONTO/MONTREAL — Due to Covid-19’s negative impact on the Canadian feature film industry, Telefilm Canada is suspending any further use of its Success Index for the 2020-2021 fiscal year, Telefilm announced in an industry advisory on Monday.

Telefilm Canada’s Success Index has been used to measure the success of films financed by the funding body, based on three weighted types of success: commercial, cultural and industrial. In addition, the Success Index also constitutes the individual company scores which determine some automatic financing amounts for the following fiscal year, and therefore Telefilm is moving all automatic financing decisions to a selective process in fiscal 2021-2022.

Earlier this year, Telefilm launched a national consultation on its Success Index, and now says it will accelerate pan-Canadian consultations with members of the industry, which will take the form of an online survey, virtual townhalls and meetings with established working groups. This national consultation is designed to help inform Telefilm’s optimization of its financing programs, including Development, Production and Talent to Watch, says the advisory.

These initiatives were originally scheduled to take place in the spring, but were put on hold due the Covid-19 pandemic, while Telefilm focused its efforts on sustaining the industry and allocating Covid-19 emergency relief funding.

Telefilm says more details about upcoming consultations will be announced shortly.
