Huawei announces Canadian P40-shot video contest winners

MARKHAM, Ont. — Huawei Canada announced today the winners of its first-ever Next-G Video Contest in which post-secondary students enrolled in video production programs across Canada were challenged to produce a short film shot on Huawei’s P40 Pro smartphone.

Almost 50 students were supplied with a Huawei P40 Pro and given 30 days to shoot and edit their submissions, which could tell a story of the contestant’s choosing. The contest was designed to combine the next generation of filmmaking talent and the latest smartphone technology, providing participants with an opportunity to be creative, explore new functionality, and put their skills and ingenuity to the test, says the news release.

In addition to two Huawei Canada executives, the judging panel included comedian Mark Rowswell (also known as Dashan), tennis player Vasek Pospisil, cinematographer Gayle Ye and feature film producer Sidney Chiu.

In a virtual awards ceremony livestreamed on July 20, the judges announced the contest’s four prize winners:

  • Anson Yan of the University of Toronto was the recipient of the grand prize for Dreaming in Toronto
  • Xu Tan of York University won the first prize for Hikaru
  • Michael Petruzzelli of York University won the second prize for Together Apart
  • Liliya Syvytska of the University of British Columbia won the third prize for Morpheus Touch

“At Huawei, we are confident and optimistic about the future — and always believe in planting seeds for the future,” said Steve Liu, vice-president of public affairs and communications at Huawei and one of the contest judges, in the release. “We are committed to helping the next generation grow, develop, and acquire new skills. This contest embodies that commitment.”

All four winning videos, along with a highlight reel, can be viewed now on the Next-G Video Contest’s official website at nextgvideo.huawei.com.
