Track your stuff with Telus (updated)

VANCOUVER — Smartphone users can now track pets, purses, backpacks and other items (including the people carrying them) with the new Track+ device launched by Telus today.

Track+ can be used in Canada and the U.S. anywhere 4G LTE wireless network coverage is available. Users don’t need to be Telus wireless subscribers to purchase and use the tracker device. The Track+ app can be used on iPhones (iPhone 5 or newer with iOS 11.0 or newer) and newer Android smartphones (with Android 5.0 or newer).

The retail price for the device is $120, but the Telus Track+ plan allows customers to pay $0 upfront and $5 per month on a two-year plan to repay the cost of the device. Included with Track+ is a pet collar attachment, a lanyard and charger.

The Track+ app’s Locate Now feature allows users to check the tracker’s location at any time, and custom notifications can provide automatic location updates to easily track items if they go missing. Plus, by attaching a tracker to their kid’s backpack or jacket, parents can receive personalized alerts when their child leaves or arrives at a location, such as school or camp.

If users know the tracker is nearby but can’t find it, they can activate the on-device ringer directly from the Track+ app. A custom safety zone feature allows users to set invisible boundaries for their tracker and receive a notification when the tracker enters or leaves a safety zone. In addition, light sensors on the tracker can generate notifications to alert users to somebody else opening their luggage or bag.

The software platform behind the device is Smith Micro’s SafePath connected life platform. The Pittsburgh-based company provides software solutions that help carriers create “new opportunities to engage consumers via smartphones and consumer IoT devices. The Smith Micro portfolio also includes a wide range of products for creating, sharing and monetizing rich content, such as visual voice messaging, optimizing retail content display and performing analytics on any product set,” says Smith’s press release.
