Stingray gives away over $20 million in radio ads to help 5,000 businesses; will celebrate top 100 Canadian songs Wednesday

MONTREAL – Canadian broadcaster and international music distributor Stingray said today its 104 Canadian radio stations helped 5,000 local businesses obtain grants in the form of radio advertising to help them emerge from the Covid-19 crisis.

A total of $20 million is being awarded in markets across the country. This is $5 million more than initially planned when the company originally announced its stimulus package in early May.

Grants range from a minimum of $1,000 up to a maximum of $100,000 in radio advertising per business. The recipient business has 12 months to utilize the radio advertising towards booking and airing a radio advertising campaign – and they are not required to invest additional sums with Stingray radio stations to receive the grant.

“As provinces throughout Canada undergo various deconfinement phases, now is a crucial time to win back customers who are eager to access services and make long-awaited purchases,” reads the company press release.

“Radio advertising has long been a successful stimulus for local economic activity in our country,” added Ian Lurie, president of Stingray Radio in the release. “The Stingray Stimulus Program… is a great opportunity for companies to inform and reassure their customers during these uncertain times.”

To qualify for the program, a local Canadian business is defined as any registered Canadian business, not for profit organization or charity which operates within 100 km of a city where a Stingray radio operation is located.

Also, as Canadians celebrate Canada Day on Wednesday, 32 of the company’s radio staions will air The Top 100 Canadian Songs of All-Time, hosted by Burton Cummings, Randy Bachman, and Stu Jeffries.

Cummings and Bachman (whose band The Guess Who made history 50 years ago when “American Woman” became the first Canadian song to top the charts in the United States) will join veteran broadcaster (and current boom 97.3 FM Toronto host) Jeffries for a full day of the most-requested Canadian songs spanning more than five decades.

On Wednesday, they’ll share stories from their years touring across Canada and around the world, as well as never-before-heard tales from behind the making of their music, says the press release.
