Cable 14 named Hamilton’s top medium-sized business

HAMILTON — In a virtual ceremony Tuesday night, Rogers and Cogeco co-owned community TV station Cable 14 was awarded the Outstanding Business Achievement Award of the Year in the medium-sized business category by the Hamilton Chamber of Commerce.

The annual awards event recognized local companies whose business achievements made an outstanding contribution to Hamilton during 2019.

More recently, Cable 14 has played a vital role for the local community during the Covid-19 pandemic. The channel partnered with the city of Hamilton’s emergency operations centre to help bring pandemic-related information to local residents. To support the activation of the city’s emergency operations centre, Cable 14 staff worked quickly to develop regular virtual resident Town Hall and media conferences to help communicate federal, provincial and municipal information designed to keep residents safe during this time.

“After 50 years of stellar service to the Hamilton community, perhaps no effort is of any greater significance than the unprecedented contributions Cable 14 has made to the residents of Hamilton over the past three months,” reads the news release.

Cable 14 began operations in 1970 as Cable 8 in the basement of an office building on Hester Street in Hamilton. Today, Cable 14’s broadcast infrastructure includes a high-definition multi-camera studio and production control room, a seven-camera fully equipped mobile television production unit and multiple single-camera newsgathering systems. In addition, the station’s expansion into the online space at www.cable14now.com lets viewers access Cable 14’s programming on any Internet-connected device, live or on-demand.

“I want to thank the Chamber of Commerce for this recognition. Cable 14 has always played a vital role in the Hamilton community driven by the combined passion and dedication of our management team, our staff, our production volunteers, and community producers. As we conclude our 50th broadcast season, I am so very proud of this team for their contributions all year long, and especially the role we have played during the pandemic,” said general manager Brent Rickert, in the news release.
