Videotron provides smartphones with unlimited data to isolated youths and seniors

MONTREAL — Videotron announced Wednesday it is providing 1,000 smartphones with unlimited data plans to youth rehabilitation centres and long-term care facilities in Quebec to help alleviate the isolation experienced by youths and seniors housed at these centres during the Covid-19 pandemic.

The initiative is being implemented in collaboration with the government of Quebec, and will enable youths and seniors to stay in touch with their families and loved ones at a time when they are more isolated than ever, says the news release. The 500 devices being distributed to youth rehabilitation centres (CRJDAs) will also make it easier for youths to access the educational modules put online by the Quebec government. The other 500 devices are being distributed to private long-term care facilities (CHSLDs).

“These devices will enable users to stay connected with their families and loved ones, and to focus on what matters most: their health. Videotron is pleased to help break down the isolation of young people and seniors living in CRJDAs and CHSLDs,” said Jean-François Pruneau, president and CEO of Videotron, in the news release.

“I am keenly aware of the situation many families are experiencing at this time. They have a natural need to stay connected during the pandemic. Using technological means, equipped with security features, is an attractive option for maintaining contact between youths living in centres and their loved ones. We support any initiative that will allow these young people to have access to the same technology as those living at home. I thank Videotron for its contribution,” said Lionel Carmant, Quebec minister for health and social services.
