AACHEN, GERMANY and TORONTO — Rogers Communications has been named the “Best in Test” wireless carrier in Canada by P3, an international leader in benchmarking mobile networks. According to the most recent P3 Mobile Benchmark Canada report, Rogers was the highest-ranking Canadian operator for both voice and data services. Bell ranked second overall, followed by Telus.
Measurements for the P3 Mobile Benchmark Canada study were conducted between May 6 and July 15, 2019. P3 tested and measured performance on the networks operated by Bell, Freedom, Rogers, Telus and Videotron, using smartphones for voice and data services in metropolitan and rural areas. Due to their limited network coverage outside urban areas, Freedom’s and Videotron’s network performance was measured only in cities, P3 said in a news release announcing the results of its report.
As part of its methodology, P3 measures smartphone voice and data performance based on extensive drive-tests, from metropolitan areas to smaller cities, roads and railways, complemented by walk-tests in big cities with special focus on busy areas, on public transport and in frequently visited buildings, such as shopping malls and main transit stations. For its P3 Mobile Benchmark Canada study, P3 conducted measurements in drive-tests, walk-tests and railway-tests. The drive-tests took place in cities and towns as well as on connecting roads, measuring a distance of 6,000 kilometres. The walk-tests covered the major cities of Vancouver, Calgary, Edmonton, Toronto, Ottawa and Montreal.
Achieving a score of 857 out of a maximum of 1,000 points, Rogers performed best overall, leading in both the voice and data categories, P3 said. However, Bell and Telus were not too far behind. Closet competitor Bell was 20 points behind with a total score of 837. Third-place Telus achieved a total score of 826 points. Videotron and Freedom trailed behind with total scores of 515 and 416 points, respectively, due to their not having been awarded any points in rural test areas.
In terms of voice performance, Rogers achieved the highest score with 347 out of a maximum of 400 points. In this area, Bell was again the closest competitor with a score of 335 points. Telus achieved 330 points out of 400. In terms of data, Rogers was again ahead of Bell and Telus, achieving a score of 510 points out of 600, compared to 502 points for Bell and 496 points for Telus.
