New Amazon, Disney offerings not for Canada

Huge Disney+ marketing campaign about to kick off

BOTH DISNEY AND Amazon this week announced new services which won’t be made available outside the United States.

On Monday, Amazon announced a new Prime Student benefit of Amazon Music Unlimited for just 99-cents per month.

New and current Prime Student members can now subscribe to Amazon Music Unlimited to access to more than 50 million songs plus thousands of curated playlists and stations at the new price. We checked with Amazon though and this new offer is not available outside the United States.

Then on Tuesday, during the conference call to discuss Disney’s quarterly earnings, CEO Robert Iger (pictured) confirmed not only will Disney launch its new streamer Disney+ on November 12th, but also that it will also offer an over-the-top bundle of Disney+, the ad-supported version of Hulu and ESPN+ for US$12.99 (a pretty good deal considering Netflix’s standard retail price is the same).

Despite a few breathless emails in our inbox wondering how Canadian companies will compete with all that OTT content, it’s worth noting Iger said during the call as he announced the coming package that it would be only for the United States. Of course, neither of ESPN+ or Hulu is available in Canada at this time and Disney has not yet officially said whether or not Disney+ will launch in Canada at the same time it launches in the U.S., but that is the assumption of many in Canadian TV.

Iger did say during the call, however, that when it comes to markets outside the States, “two actually are going to launch when we launch Disney+, around the same time.”

That said, expect a big blowout, soon, from the Disney marketing department – which will of course spill over here. “I'm actually going through a comprehensive marketing plan with the team next week,” Iger said when asked about the push plans for Disney+, which he said consumers would begin seeing by the end of August.

“Comprehensive probably is an understatement. It is going to be treated as the most important product that the company has launched in, I don't know, certainly during my tenure in the job,” he added.
