BRAMPTON – At a Rogers Communications, Ryerson and ISED cybersecurity announcement on Friday, Innovation, Science and Economic Development Minister Navdeep Bains took a moment during the event to thank Rogers for lowering its wireless pricing.
Rogers was announced as one of the founding partners of a new national cybersecurity centre in downtown Brampton that will be known as Ryerson University’s Rogers Cybersecure Catalyst.
A not-for-profit organization owned and operated by Toronto’s Ryerson University, the Catalyst will offer specialized training programs for Canada’s growing cybersecurity sector. Bains pledged $10 million to the venture through FedDev Ontario, a move that he said builds upon the federal government’s digital charter.
However, the other move Rogers made last week – to offer unlimited data for $75/month (followed quickly by price matching three-week promotions by Bell and Telus)– did not evade the notice of a Minister who has been strongly urging the Canadian wireless industry to lower their prices.
“Joe has done a tremendous job in helping advance the government’s agenda when it comes to affordability,” said Bains during his remarks (pictured from the Minister's Facebook page broadcast). “Recently we just heard that incredible announcement with unlimited data plans from Rogers – but also really helping those families in urban communities with the Connecting Families initiative – a $10 per month internet program.”
