OTTAWA — Without publicly naming names, the CRTC issued a letter Friday to telecom service providers who have not submitted their six-month progress report regarding their implementation of measures to reduce caller ID spoofing and to determine the origin of nuisance calls, a compliance requirement they must meet by March 31.
In the Telecom Commission letter posted on its website, the CRTC reminded telecom service providers (TSPs) that the Commission’s Compliance and Enforcement and Telecom Decision CRTC 2018-32, issued January 25, 2018, determined that authentication and verification of caller ID information for IP voice calls should be implemented by Canadian TSPs by no later than March 31, 2019, “to empower Canadians to better protect themselves against nuisance calls.”
As part of its compliance and enforcement decision, the CRTC required TSPs to report on their progress by submitting to the CRTC Interconnection Steering Committee (CISC) a report every six months from the date of the decision (beginning July 25, 2018). The CISC was expected to consolidate the TSP information and submit an industry progress report to the CRTC every six months. The CISC Network Working Group (NTWG) developed a template for all TSPs to complete in an effort to ensure information is provided in a consistent manner.
According to its records, the CISC NTWG has not received progress reports from certain TSPs, which were due on January 25, 2019. Those TSPs now have until March 8 to provide an update on their progress in implementing authentication/verification measures for caller ID.
The Commission’s letter provided a template for TSPs to use to submit their progress report and additional contact information should TSPs have any questions regarding the letter.
