
LOS GATOS, CA – Shaking off reports of slowing growth, Netflix added 7 million new subscribers in its third quarter, ahead of its internal forecasts and pushing its worldwide customer base to 137 million.
The record number of additions from July through September included 1.09 million domestically and 5.87 internationally.
In a note to shareholders that included its Q3 results, Netflix credited its slate of original programming for helping to boost streaming revenue to $3.91 million, a 36% jump year-over-year. This past quarter, in original series, the streamer launched new seasons of Orange is the New Black, Ozark, and Marvel’s Luke Cage, plus premiered a number of new titles, including Insatiable and Maniac.
“We also continue to expand our international originals, with projects spanning India, Mexico, Spain, Italy, Germany, Brazil, France, Turkey and throughout the Middle East to just name a few”, reads the note. “In India, our hit series Sacred Games was followed up by Ghoul in late August. La Casa de las Flores, our latest Mexican original, has become a big hit.”
For the quarter, Netflix posted total revenue of $4 billion and net income of $403 million, up from $2.98 billion and $130 million in the same period last year.
For the current quarter, Netflix forecast that it will add 1.8 million customers in the United States and 7.6 million in international markets.
